Services

Four ways we work

Your acupuncturist says what they plan before each visit, and you can say no to any part of it.

  • Acupuncture

Fine, sterile, single-use needles at a few chosen points, with time to rest. Most visits are this.

    Acupuncture
  • Herbal medicine

A tea formula, called hanyak, made for you after your acupuncturist asks what you already take.

    Herbal medicine
  • Cupping

Warm glass or silicone cups on the back and shoulders, for tight muscles after a long week.

    Cupping
  • Moxibustion

Gentle radiant warmth held over a point, often added at the end of a visit.

The style

Korean-style, in plain words

Korean traditional medicine shares roots with Chinese medicine and has its own habits. At Barley that shows up in small, concrete ways.

  • Hands, feet and the belly

Points on the hands and feet are common, and your acupuncturist presses along the abdomen to see where you hold tension.

  • A tea formula when it fits

Hanyak is a herbal tea made for you. It is never required, and we check it against everything you take.

  • Barley tea while you wait

A cup of roasted barley tea, boricha, is on in both waiting rooms.

Questions

Before you book

Does acupuncture hurt?

Most people feel a small tap or a brief ache at some points, then a dull, heavy or warm feeling. The needles are much thinner than the ones used for injections. Tell your acupuncturist if anything is too much and they will adjust or take the needle out.

Are the needles clean?

Every needle is sterile, comes in its own pack, is used on one person and is thrown away in a sharps container. We clean the skin first and wash our hands between patients.

Which office should I choose?

Whichever is easier to reach. River Edge is open on weekdays and Saturday morning, and Little Ferry on Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday. Both offices offer the same services.

Do you work with my insurance?

Some plans include an acupuncture benefit and some do not. We check yours before your first visit and tell you what we find, and we give a written estimate to anyone paying without insurance.

Can I come in Korean?

Yes. Misook Jeon and Wonsik Shim speak Korean. Tell us when you book, and we will schedule you with one of them.
