Moxibustion

Moxibustion warms a point on the body with a smoldering stick of dried mugwort, held a few inches above the skin. It is often added at the end of an acupuncture visit, and you can say stop at any time.

Who usually comes in

People who feel cold in the low back, hips or feet, or who like a warm, slow finish to a visit. Some come because a grandparent used moxa at home.

What a visit is like, in order

Afterward your clothes and hair may smell faintly of smoke, and the skin may look pink for a short while.

  1. 01

    Step 1: We talk

Your acupuncturist asks about smoke, heat and your skin, and explains where the warmth will go.

  2. 02

Step 2: The warmth is held

A stick is held above the point and moved slowly. You feel a gentle, spreading warmth, never a burn.

  3. 03

Step 3: The smoke is kept light

We use the smallest amount that works and keep the room ventilated. A smokeless version is available.

  4. 04

    Step 4: You rest

We put the stick out fully, check the skin and tell you how to care for it.

Tell us first

Say any of these when you book, and again at the visit.

  • Pregnancy

If you are or might be pregnant, some points are avoided and your acupuncturist explains the risks.

  • Blood thinners or bleeding

If you take a blood thinner or bleed easily, bruising is more likely.

  • A pacemaker or implant

Some visits use a small electrical current on the needles, which is not suitable with a pacemaker.

  • Lymph nodes removed

If you have had lymph nodes removed, we avoid needles on that side.

  • Worry about needles

Say so. We can begin with other methods or go very slowly.

  • Smoke sensitivity or asthma

Tell us before the visit. We use a smokeless version, or leave moxa out.

How many visits, and what this does not do

Moxibustion is a small part of a visit and is not needed every time. Your acupuncturist suggests how often, and you can say no whenever you like.

What it does not do

Moxibustion does not replace your doctor's care, and we do not promise a result. If you cannot feel heat well on part of your body, we skip it there.

When to see a doctor instead

See your doctor or an urgent care center first for chest pain, trouble breathing, sudden weakness or numbness, a sudden severe headache, or a fever with a stiff neck. In an emergency, call 911.
