Questions
What people ask before they book
Does acupuncture hurt?
Most people feel a small tap or a brief ache at some points, then a dull, heavy or warm feeling. The needles are much thinner than the ones used for injections. Tell your acupuncturist if anything is too much and they will adjust or take the needle out.
Are the needles clean?
Every needle is sterile, comes in its own pack, is used on one person and is thrown away in a sharps container. We clean the skin first and wash our hands between patients.
How many visits will I need?
It depends on what brought you in and how you respond. After the first visit your acupuncturist suggests a plan, often a few visits close together and then more space between them, and looks at it again as you go. You can stop whenever you like.
Does insurance cover acupuncture?
Some plans include an acupuncture benefit and some do not. We check yours before your first visit. How fees work explains what we do for plans and for anyone paying without insurance.
Can I use my HSA or FSA?
Many plans allow it for acupuncture. Ask your plan administrator before you book.
What should I wear and eat?
Wear loose clothes that roll up past the knee and the elbow. Eat something light beforehand, and do not come hungry or very full.
What happens at a first visit?
About 75 minutes: a talk about your health and your medicines, a look at your tongue and your pulse, a treatment, and a plan. Your acupuncturist explains the risks and answers your questions before any needle goes in.
Can I have acupuncture if I am pregnant?
Tell us if you are or might be pregnant. Some points are avoided, and your acupuncturist explains the risks. It also helps to tell the clinician who looks after your pregnancy.
Will I have to stop my medicine?
No. Tell your acupuncturist and your prescriber about everything you take, including herbs and supplements. Never stop a prescribed medicine because of anything we say; ask your prescriber.
Are herbs safe with my medicines?
Herbs can interact with some medicines. Bring us a list of everything you take, prescriptions, over-the-counter medicines, vitamins and herbs, and we check it before we suggest anything. Show your doctor or pharmacist any formula we give you.
What does acupuncture not help?
It does not replace your doctor's care, and it is not a treatment for disease. We do not name diseases, and we do not promise a result.
When should I see a doctor instead?
See your doctor or an urgent care center first for chest pain, trouble breathing, sudden weakness or numbness, a sudden severe headache, or a fever with a stiff neck. In an emergency, call 911.
Can I come in Korean?
Yes. Misook Jeon and Wonsik Shim speak Korean. Tell us when you book and we will schedule you with one of them.
